What is Business As Mission?
THE STRATEGIC USE OF AUTHENTIC BUSINESS ACTIVITIES TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES TO MINISTER AND EVANGELIZE WITHIN THE BUSINESS SPHERES OF INFLUENCE WITH THE AIM OF HOLISTIC TRANSFORMATION.
Business As Mission (“BAM” for short) is a term and a movement, not an organization. It is meant to be a deliberate approach for Christians to work, invest, or operate a business. It aims to thoughtfully execute each business activity as an opportunity to demonstrate the Gospel: God’s love for us manifested in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, for those who do not know it.
As business people, we are ambassadors in the world to be conduits of light for the hope and peace of Christ. Our business practices model the presence of Christ in each endeavor taken, so others may know the eternal weight of God’s glory and love. This commitment acknowledges the difficulty inherent in work as tests of our faith. Humbly by the Holy Spirit, it also instills confidence to prove out the Faith as others see our perseverance through life’s circumstances.
Breaking down the definition above, here are 5 components to what we see BAM as:
The intentional pursuit for excellence in the business and as a profession of the Faith. Any enterprise must focus these two elements daily with stakeholders as well as with the long term direction of the business.
“SPHERES OF INFLUENCE”
Relationships over time provide opportunities for stakeholders to see the distinct character of the business, e.g. its witness: (a) in direct interactions among internal and external groups such as employees, clients, suppliers, governments, and (b) the indirect influence the business affects in its community with families and friends of employees, local communities, and other businesses within the market.
“AUTHENTIC BUSINESS ACTIVITIES”
Real, viable, sustainable, and profitable business operations that contribute to the success of the business over time.
Business as Mission companies believe in the power of Holy Spirit to transform individuals and communities on all levels (physical, spiritual, emotional, behavioral) and thus seek to be faithful instruments for the Holy Spirit by revealing Christ through the business to the greater glory of God.
“MINISTER AND EVANGELIZE”
The business is both the means and the message; it leverages every opportunity to serve spiritual, social, and economic needs; it therefore embodies the Gospel message through its demonstrable, distinctive actions.
